Abstract

527,713. Sulphuryl chorofluoride. GOWLAND, T. B., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 12, 1939, No. 11106. [Class 1 (ii)] Sulphuryl chlorofluoride is prepared by reacting sulphuryl chloride with antimony trifluoride at elevated temperatures in a sealed apparatus and in the presence of bromine or an antimony pentahalide without removal of any of the reaction products until the reaction is substantially complete and thereafter isolating the sulphuryl chlorofluoride e.g. by fractional distillation. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a small amount of water. In the example sulphuryl chloride, antimony trifluoride and antimony pentachloride are maintained at 250‹C. for 6 hours in a steel bomb and the sulphuryl chlorofluoride obtained by distillation and subsequent fractionation.
