Abstract

1,216,503. Fluorinated aryl compounds. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 6 Sept., 1968 [6 June, 1967], No. 26157/67. Heading C2C. The invention comprises a process for the manufacture of compounds of the formula ArCX 2 RCX 2 Ar<SP>1</SP>, wherein Ar and Ar<SP>1</SP> denote aromatic nuclei, R denotes an alkylene group which is at least semi-fluorinated and X denotes chlorine or bromine, from compounds of the formula ArCORCOAr<SP>1</SP>. The process consists in heating the starting materials to a temperature of at least 180‹ C. for a period of at least about 50 hours with phosphorus pentachloride or pentabromide, phosphorus trichloride or tribromide or a mixture of phosphorus trichloride or tribromide with chlorine or bromine. An example is given of the conversion of 1,3-dibenzoylhexafluoropropane into 1,5- diphenyl - 1,1,5,5 - tetrachlorohexafluoropentane. The product may be converted into 1,5 - diphenyldecafluoropentane by heating with antimony trifluoride in the presence of antimony pentachloride as catalyst. Starting materials of the second formula above are obtainable by a Friedel-Crafts reaction between an aromatic compound and a compound of the formula XCORCOX, where X is chlorine or bromine. The example describes the preparation of 1,3-dibenzoylhexafluoropropane from benzene and perfluoroglutaryl dichloride.
