Abstract

1436657 A process for the bromination of organic compounds ISC CHEMICALS Ltd 16 April 1975 [16 April 1974] 16424/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for brominating anomatic compounds containing two or more non-condensed benzene nuclei, in the liquid phase, in which the starting material is reacted with elemental bromine in the presence of a halogen carrier and in the substantial absence of diluent or solvent liquids (other than reactants or products) and the extent of bromination is limited to give a product mixture which is liquid at the temperature of reaction. Preferably the starting material is diphenyl oxide and the percentage of bromine in the product is between 67 and 73% by weight. Preferably the reaction temperature is within the range of 25‹ to 100‹ C.
