Abstract

Trifluoromethyl benzaldehydes are made by treating trifluoromethyl benzalfluorides with concentrated sulphuric acid at a raised temperature. The products are easily oxidized to the corresponding benzoic acids, combine with bisulphite, and give the corresponding acid chlorides with chlorine. They are intermediates for dyestuffs, pharmaceutical products and fungicides or insecticides. In examples: (1) o- (or m- or p-) trifluoromethyl-benzaldehyde is obtained from o- (or m- or p-) trifluoromethyl-benzalfluoride; (2) the corresponding nuclearly substituted xylene pentafluorides, such as the mono- or di-halogen derivatives, give the corresponding trifluoromethyl-benzaldehydes, such as 4-chloro-1-trifluoromethyl-2-benzaldehyde; (3) the octachlorination product of pseudocumene is converted to the corresponding octafluoro compound, and the latter, or mesitylene octafluoride or a nuclear substitution product of either is treated with sulphuric acid. Trifluoromethyl - benzalfluorides are obtained from polymethylbenzenes by chlorination according to Specification 114,645, [Class 2 (iii)], or 465,885 to produce a trichloromethyl-benzalchloride, followed by exchanging the chlorine atoms for fluorine according to any known process such as that described in Specification 395,227.
