Abstract

Thiocarbonile halides, "of the type CSCl2," which may contain in solution carbon sulphide, sulphur chloride, carbon tetrachloride or other corresponding haloid compounds, are prepared (1) by reaction of carbon sulphide with chlorine in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst such as iron, chromium or manganese, or their salts, iodine, or antimony tetrachloride; (2) by the reaction of liquid carbon sulphide with chlorine in presence of a catalyst; (3) by reaction between chloride of sulphur and carbon sulphide with or without a catalyst; (4) by the reaction of chlorine, sulphur and coal in a furnace, with or without a catalyst; (5) by the action of chloride of sulphur on coal at high temperature; (6) by the action of chlorine or of chloride of sulphur upon a mixture of coal and metallic sulphides. In each of these methods chlorine or its compounds may be replaced by fluorine, bromine or iodine, or their compounds.ALSO:A fumigant, which may be used for destroying pests in grain, consists of a haloid derivative of carbon disulphide "of the thiocarbonile chloride type," which may contain in solution one or more of the following substances, viz. carbon disulphide, sulphur chloride, and carbon tetrachloride. The product may be made, (1) by reaction of carbon disulphide with chlorine in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst such as iron, chrominm or manganese or their salts, iodine, or antimony tetrachloride; (2) by the reaction of liquid carbon disulphide with chlorine in presence of catalysts; (3) by reaction between chloride of sulphur and carbon disulphide, with or without a catalyst; (4) by the reaction of chlorine sulphur and coal in a furnace, with or without a catalyst; (5) by the action of chloride of sulphur on coal at high temperature; (6) by the action of chlorine or of chloride of sulphur upon a mixture of coal and metallic sulphides. In each of these methods of preparation chlorine or its compounds may be replaced by fluorine, bromine or iodine or their compounds.
