Abstract

In the destructive hydrogenation of carbonaceous materials in the presence of corrosive halogens, corrosion of the apparatus is prevented by the addition of sulphates or sulphites of alkali, alkaline earth metals or of zinc. The sulphates &c. may be added before or during the reaction either dispersed in water or oil, or on carriers, e.g. active carbon, lignite coke, or destructive hydrogenation residues. Catalysts comprising metals or their compounds, e.g. oxides, sulphides, halides or acid salts may also be added. The halogens or halogen compounds may also be added before or during the reaction and non-metallic halides, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, ethylene chloride, ethyl and methyl chloride, benzoyl chloride chlorbenzene, sulphur monochloride or tetrachloride, selenium monochloride phosphorus trichloride, ammonium chloride are particularly suitable. 0,01 per cent molybdic acid, 1,5 per cent sodium sulphate and 11 per cent ammonium chloride are added to a paste containing equal proportions of ground bituminous coal and heavy oil, and the paste is led with hydrogen at 250 atms. pressure through a tubular system heated to 440 DEG C. into a reaction vessel before which 0,01 per cent molybdic acid dispersed in a heavy asphalt-face oil is added. The liquid and solid residues are separated in a separator from the vapours and gases which are found to contain the chlorine in combined form. Specification 432,958 is referred to.
