Abstract

Aromatic compounds fluorinated in the side-chain are made by interaction between practically anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and the corresponding compounds chlorinated in the side-chain. According to examples, p-chlorobenzotrichloride, 1 : 3 - bis-trichloromethyl-benzene, 1 : 4-bistrichloromethyl-benzene, o-chlorobenzotrichloride, and 2 : 4 dichlorobenzotrichloride are thus fluorinated, the products being the corresponding o -trifluoromethyl derivatives with p-chlorobenzodifluoridechloride, and p-chlorobenzoic acid as byeproducts in the first case. The products may be converted by customary methods into nitro and amino-trifluoromethyl derivatives. m-xylene-o -hexachloride may be obtained by chlorinating m-xylene exposing it to light.
