Abstract

Halogen derivatives of aliphatic hydrocarbons having relatively high melting-points have their melting points reduced before treatment with a fluorating agent. For example, hexachloroethane, hexabromoethane, or tetrabromodichloroethane is mixed with antimony pentachloride, and then treated with a fluorating agent such as hydrogen fluoride or antimony trifluoride. The antimony pentachloride may be prepared in situ from the trichloride and chlorine. By varying the temperature of the dephlegmator during the fluoration, the degree of fluoration is also varied.
