Abstract

Carbon black is obtained by a cyclic process in which a hydrocarbon is caused to interact with a chlorinated hydrocarbon as described in Specification 343,477, carbon and hydrochloric acid being produced, and the hydrochloric acid is employed to chlorinate further quantities of hydrocarbon. This latter step may be effected by first obtaining chlorine e.g. by electrolysis of solutions of hydrogen chloride or by passing a mixture of hydrogen chloride and oxygen over a chlorine carrier such as cuprous chloride to convert it into a higher chloride which is then employed in known manner to chlorinate a hydrocarbon. The mixture of hydrocarbon and chlorinated hydrocarbon may be caused to react in an atmospheric burner of the type described in Specification 317,165, [Class 90, Nonmetallic elements.]
