Abstract
455,256. Electrolytic purification of graphite. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Nov. 8, 1935, No. 30941. Convention date, Nov. 8, 1934. Drawings to Specification. [Class 41] The graphite electrodes of electric discharge devices containing metallic vapour are purified, particularly from alkaline or alkaline earth compounds which readily emit electrons or positive ions by electrolysis in which the graphite is the anode. Preferably a strong acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid is used as the electrolyte, and a further treatment may be given with a weak electrolyte, e.g. water containing a weak acid as carbonic acid. The electrolyte may be heated. Before assembly in the discharge apparatus, the graphite parts are heated in an air-tight or vacuum furnace to about 1500‹ C., to remove final traces of electrolyte.
