Abstract

307,190. Levy, S. I., and Gray, G. W. Feb. 10, 1928. Drawings to Specification. Grant of Patent opposed. Iron and lead, obtaining.- The residue from the treatment of pyrites with chlorine at 250- 1000‹ C. is dissolved in water to give a saturated solution of chlorides, from which copper may be precipitated by iron, lead be removed by electrolysis at low E.M.F. as described in Specification 307,188, and iron then recovered by electrolysis. Alternatively a hot saturated aqueous solution at 100‹ C. may be cooled to separate pure ferrous chloride crystals, and these be dissolved in spent electrolyte to form a concentrated solution which is electrolyzed at 90-100‹ C. until the ferrous chloride content falls to 20 per cent. An E.M.F. of 2.3-9 volts may be used, a current density of 10-25 amps. per square foot, and an anode of carbon or other inert material immersed in a concentrated solution of calcium, sodium, magnesium, or other chloride contained in a porous chamber.
