Abstract
304,053. Levy, S. I., and Gray, G. W. Feb. 10, 1928. Iron and chlorine, obtaining; diaphragms.-A concentrated solution of ferrous chloride is electrolyzed at a temperature of 90-100‹ C. in a cell comprising a carbon or like anode in a compartment containing a concentrated solution of chloride of sodium, calcium, magnesium, or other metal or radicle which only forms one chloride; the ferrous chloride solution flows through the cell at such a rate that the issuing spent liquor contains 20 per cent Fe Cl2. Iron is deposited on the cathode. The anode compartment is provided with an exit pipe for chlorine; water vapour passing off with the chlorine is condensed and returned. The spent liquor is used to dissolve further quantities of ferrous chloride. A current density of 10-25 amps per sq. ft. at 2.3-3.0 volts is employed. The anode compartment may be cvlindrical or formed bv a wall across the cell. It may be formed by moulding from china clay paste without addition of soluble, fluxing or glazing material, drying slowly and firing.
