Abstract
<PICT:0997887/C6-C7/1> Aqueous alkali metal chloride solution is electrolysed at a pH below 5 in an alkali-chlorine cell using as anode having a Pt surface which has been pre-treated by subjecting it to cathodic electrolytic action. Typically a sodium chloride brine heated to a temperature between 20 DEG C. and its boiling point is electrolysed at a pH above 1, e.g. 3.5, using a pre-treated anode or Pt or W, Al, V, Nb, Pd or preferably Ti or Ta coated with a layer of at least 3m inches of Pt, the coating thickness for a Pd base being at least 100m inches. The pre-treatment may be effected in a separate cell and the treated anodes may be stored before use. Alternatively the anode may be connected briefly, e.g. for 10 seconds, as cathode in the brine cell in which it is to be used for alkali-chlorine production. As shown, the brine cell comprises cylindrical glass tanks 1 and 3 connected by a cylinder 2 containing a diaphragm 12 of asbestos, sintered glass, or asbestos impregnated with a polymer of maleic acid or its anhydride with divinyl benzene and/or styrene. The brine is introduced into the anode compartment 1 which contains a platinum-coated anode 4 with a platinum connector rod 5 encased in a glass tube 6 and a heater 13 while compartment 3 contains a platinum or steel cathode and a glass catholyte withdrawal tube 14. If polarity reversal is employed for anode conditioning a voltmeter can be arranged to signal a rise of say 1% in cell voltage and automatically initiate polarity reversal. Specification 917,879 is referred to.
