Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent concentration rise of alkali chloride metal salt in the catholyte, by lowering the temperature of the electrolytic cell by exchanging the high temperature anolyte with low temperature supply salt water when stopping power supply, when electrolyzing aqueous solution of alkali chloride metal salt by cation exchange membrane method. CONSTITUTION:In an electrolytic cell which is divided into the anode chamber and cathode chamber by means of cation exchange membrane, aqueous solution (salt water) of alkali chloride metal salt such as NaCl is electrolyzed to produce chlorine and NaOH. In case power supply is interrupted due to trouble in the power source or the like, the NaCl in the bath of anode chamber enters the cathode chamber through the cation exchange membrane, thereby lowering the purity of the product NaOH. To prevent this, the anode bath in the anode chamber is exchanged with salt water at low temperature immediately after power failure. Thus, the NaCl in the anode bath is prevented from passing through the cation exchange memberane to leak into the cathode chamber. At this time, when the NaOH concentration in the cathode chamber is 25, 30, 35 or 40%, the bath of the higher temperature in either anode chamber or cathode chamber is maintained below 55, 60, 69 or 90 deg.C.
