Abstract

In a method of anodically finishing the surface of iron or an alloy thereof to form a pear-like surface, i. e. having irregularities but being neither rough nor mirror smooth, the electrolyte used comprises a solution of at least one inorganic acid or salt thereof, e.g. sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, ferric chloride, sodium sulphate or ferric sulphate; and a substance having the property of adhering to the surface of the iron or alloys thereof during electrolysis comprising an inorganic acid or salt thereof, e.g. gluconic or oxalic acids or salts thereof or tannic acid, a carbohydrate e.g. starch, cellulose, glucose, fructose, sucrose or maltose, a C10 - C30 fatty acid or derivative thereof, glycerine or other polyhydric alcohol, activated carbon or a natural or synthetic high molecular weight substance, e.g. glue, agar, polyethylene or polyvinylalcohol; the composition of the bath and the electrolytic operating conditions being correlated to encourage irregular surface production by anodic dissolution of the metal. The voltage may be 0.5 to 25 volts, the anode current density 5-300 A/dm2 and the bath temperature 0-100 DEG C.
