537,501. Electrolytically refining aluminium. COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES ALAIS, FROGES ET CAMARGUE. June 30, 1939, No. 19090. Convention date, July 12, 1938. [Class 41] To replenish or correct the composition of fused electrolyte in refining aluminium by igneous electrolysis in a vessel a containing a lower layer b of aluminium-heavy-metal alloy as anode and an upper layer d of pure aluminium as cathode, part of the electrolyte c is separated from the remainder as by a carbon tube f, salts are then added and purified by electrolysis of the separated part of the electrolyte while still continuing refining the aluminium as by leaving part of the liquid aluminium within the tube f to act as an auxiliary cathode electrically connected through the tube f. Fluxes, e.g. sodium chloride may be added at the same time. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 part of the container a may be partitioned off for supply of salts which pass through a slot in the partition. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
