Abstract

The invention comprises sulphur dyes obtainable by chlorinating decacyclene with sulphuryl chloride at a temperature not above the boiling point of the sulphuryl chloride and treating the product thus obtained, which contains 8-10 or more atoms of chlorine per molecule, with sulphur at above 250 DEG C. The chlorination may be performed in presence of an indifferent diluent, e.g. monochlorbenzene, and in presence of a chlorination catalyst such as iron, iron salts, aluminium chloride, iodine. An example describes the treatment of decacyclene with sulphuryl chloride in presence of iron at 20-40 DEG C., and heating the isolated, ground reaction product, containing 45 per cent chlorine, with sulphur at 250-270 DEG C. The product dyes cotton brown shades which may be after-treated with a mixture of potassium chromate and copper sulphate. Specification 468,627 [Group IV] is referred to.
