Abstract

Dyestuffs of the phthalocyanine series are manufactured by heating phthalocyanines with aromatic compounds containing halogen in a side chain, e.g. benzyl chloride, benzal chloride, benzotrichloride, dichlorobenzotrichlorides, 3-nitro-4-chlorobenzotrifluoride, m-xylene tetrachloride, 2-o -chloromethylnaphthalene or 2-o -chloromethyl-5 : 6 : 7 : 8-tetrahydronaphthalene, advantageously in the presence of substances which accelerate the reaction, viz.: the halides of aluminium, iron, zinc, arsenic, antimony, phosphorus or copper, or phosphorus oxychloride, and preferably in the presence of diluents, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, tetrachlorethane, commercial dichlorobenzene, commercial trichlorobenzene, nitrobenzene, pyridine, quinoline, excess of the aromatic halogen compound, mixtures of anhydrous aluminium halides and alkali metal salts such as sodium or potassium chloride, or addition compounds of aluminium halides with sulphur dioxide. When starting from a metal-free phthalocyanine, metal may be introduced by adding metal salts. The products may be used as body colours or as initial materials for further reactions. In examples: (1) metal - free phthalocyanine (obtained by the reaction of four molecules of phthalodinitrile in the absence of metal compounds) is heated with benzal chloride in commercial trichlorobenzene in the presence of antimony trichloride; (2) metal-free phthalocyanine is similarly reacted with benzotrichloride; (3) the reaction of (2) is effected in the presence of tetrachlorethane; (4) copper phthalocyanine is dissolved in a melt of aluminium and sodium chlorides, and the mixture is heated with 2 : 4-dichlorobenzotrichloride; (5) copper phthalocyanine is heated with m-xylene tetrabromide in nitrobenzene in the presence of aluminium chloride.
