Abstract
Halogenated phthalocyanines containing more than 12 atoms of halogen in the molecule are manufactured by heating phthalocyanines free from halogen with a halogen or other halogenating agent in the presence of halogenated benzenes and of a halogen transferrer under atmospheric pressure. The products may be used as green to yellow-green pigments. In examples: (1) chlorine is passed into a heated mixture of metal-free phthalocyanine, antimony pentachloride, sulphurous chloride and commercial trichlorobenzene; (2) chlorine is passed into a heated suspension of copper phthalocyanine and antimony trisulphide in a mixture of tri- and tetrachlorobenzene (obtained by chlorinating commercial trichlorobenzene); nickel phthalocyanine may be similarly treated. Other reaction materials specified are: phthalocyanines: aluminium, chromium, zinc and tin phthalocyanines, and substituted phthalocyanines, e.g. the tetraphenyl compound; halogenating agents: bromine, phosgene, phosphorus pentachloride and oxychloride, thionyl chloride and sulphuryl chloride; diluents: mono- and dichlorobenzene or mixtures thereof (which become converted into tri- or tetrahalogenbenzenes during the halogenation); halogen transferrers: the halides and sulphides of aluminium, iron and antimony, or mixtures thereof with sulphur or sulphurous chloride.
