Abstract

Halogenated phthalocyanines containing more than 12 atoms of halogen in the molecule are obtained by acting on phthalocyanines free from halogen with chlorinating or brominating agents in the presence of a diluent and a halogen transferrer at a temperature below 200 DEG C. and preferably under pressure. As initial material may be used:--the metal free phthalocyanines and those containing copper, nickel, aluminium, chromium, tin, and zinc; the phthalocyanines obtained from 3 : 4 dicyano-diphenyl and 1 : 2 dicyano-naphthalene; the sodium salt of copper-phthalocyanine-trisulphonic acid; and substituted phthalocyanines. Suitable halogenating agents are free chlorine and bromine, antimony trichloride, phosphorus oxychloride and pentachloride, phosgene, thionyl chloride and sulphuryl chloride. As halogen transferrers there may be used iodine, antimony and its sulphides, iron, copper, aluminium, tin and the salts of iron, zinc, aluminium, nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese. Suitable diluents are the high boiling point derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated fatty acids, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, aceto- and propio-nitriles, sulphur dioxide, melts of anhydrous halides of aluminium, salts of alkali and alkali earth metals, and oxides of aluminium, titanium, and silicon. Excess of the halogenating agent may also be used as a diluent. The halogenated phthalocyanines obtained are insoluble and may be incorporate as pigments with lacquers and plastic masses, precipitated on alumina or barium sulphate, and used in printing inks. The Provisional Specifications describe also the preparation of halogenated phthalocyanines containing less than 12 atoms of halogen in the molecule, and the use of temperatures above 200 DEG C., and the second Provisional Specification refers to Specification 466,194.
