Abstract

Green pigments are obtained by chlorinating or brominating a phthalocyanine to such a degree that the sum of the halogen atoms present in the molecule is at least 8. Chlorine, bromine, thionyl chloride or sulphuryl chloride may be used for halogenation and a halogen carrier such as aluminium chloride or bromide, antimony tri- or pentachloride, ferric chloride, zinc chloride, iodine, sulphur, sulphur chloride, phosphorus pentachloride, may be present; reaction may take place in a solvent or diluent, and in some cases unstable combinations of phthalocyanine and halogen first formed are converted to stable products by a heat treatment or by treatment with basic substances. In examples: (a) metal-free phthalocyanine is treated with bromine in an autoclave at 300 DEG C. for 2 \ba1/2\be hours, and the product then heated in vacuo at 250 DEG C.; or with chlorine at 250 DEG C. for 6 hours; or with sulphuryl chloride in an autoclave for 4 \ba1/2\be hours at 230 DEG C.; or with sulphuryl chloride and anhydrous aluminium chloride in a closed vessel at 200--210 DEG C. for \ba1/2\be hour followed by treatment with aqueous caustic alkali (the product contains aluminium); or with thionyl chloride and sulphuryl chloride at the boiling point for 48 hours with or without the additional introduction of chlorine gas; (b) copper phthalocyanine is heated with bromine in a sealed vessel at 210 DEG C. for 2 \ba1/2\be hours, the product then heated at 260 DEG C., and finally with more bromine at 290 DEG C. for 5 hours; (c) copper octachlorphthalocyanine (prepared by reacting together 3.6-dichlorphthalic anhydride, cupric chloride and urea) is heated with bromine in a closed vessel at 270 DEG C. for 15 hours; (d) nickel or zinc phthalocyanine is heated with bromine in a sealed vessel at 250 DEG C. for 15 hours, and the products heated at 260 DEG C. until no bromine or hydrogen bromide is evolved. It appears possible by direct halogenation to introduce not more than 12 halogen atoms. Specifications 322,169, [Class 2 (iii)], 389,842, 390,149, and 410,814 are referred to.
