Abstract
Halogenated copper phthalocyanines containing an average of 12 to 16 chlorine or chlorine and bromine atoms per molecule are made by heating copper phthalocyanine at a temperature of up to 100 DEG C. with a pyrosulphuryl chloride of the formula <FORM:0949714/C3/1> in the presence of thionyl chloride, and optionally in the presence of chlorine and/or bromine. Phthalyl chloride or phthalic anhydride may also be present when chlorination may be effected without using elementary chlorine. When bromine is used, copper phthalocyanine containing both chlorine and bromine is obtained. Halogenation catalysts such as iodine and antimony pentachloride may be used. Examples are given.
