Abstract

Phthalic acid dichloride is made by subjecting phthalide or mixtures containing it to photochemical chlorination with elementary chlorine at 80-220 DEG C., preferably at 100-170 DEG C. The process may be applied to mixtures of phthalide and phthalic anhydride obtained by the oxidation of o-xylene in the liquid phase, such mixtures being first esterified with methanol and then chlorinated as described above. Examples are given.
