Abstract
Chlorinated phthalic anhydrides are prepared by chlorination of phthalic anhydride in the presence of a chloride of molybdenum. Temperatures as low as 55 DEG C. may be used, usually they are from 200 DEG C. rising to 260-275 DEG C. An inert solvent may be added if desired to depress the melting point of the reaction mass. The mono-, di-, tri- or tetrachloro-derivatives or mixtures may be obtained. The catalyst, e.g. molybdenum pentachloride is removed after the reaction by passing chlorine or an inert gas through the hot reaction mixture and the last traces may be removed by washing with hot water. A two-stage batch or continuous chlorination process is described, and an example is given of the preparation of tetrachlorophthalic anhydride. Specification 357,165 is referred to.
