Abstract
The process for the preparation of benzene hexachloride by catalytic chlorination of benzene in a liquid phase containing benzene and acetic anhydride according to the parent Specification is carried out at a temperature between 278 DEG K and 248 DEG K, preferably between 273 DEG K and 258 DEG K while removing continuously a portion of the mass from the reaction zone, heating the portion to volatilize acetic acid and acetyl chloride (formed as by products) and to convert them into acetic anhydride and hydrogen chloride, returning the acetic anhydride to the said portion, recovering benzene hexachloride from the portion and returning the remainder to the reaction zone. The recovery of the benzene hexachloride is suitably effected by converting it into a hot liquid stripped of solvent and stirring vigorously into water to remove residual acetic anhydride and to form the benzene hexachloride into pellets. A continuous process is described with reference to a drawing.
