Abstract

Polyolefins having an essentially linear and unbranched molecular structure are reacted, in the form of a free-flowing solid mass, with a halogen in the absence of a catalyst unless the mass is slurried in an inert liquid. Ethylene is the specified polyolefin. The mass is preferably agitated and subjected to the halogen atmosphere at 5 DEG to 100 DEG C. below the sintering temperature of the polymer; the agitation may be caused by passing a current of the halogen atmosphere through the polyolefin mass. The halogen may be chlorine, bromine, fluorine or mixtures thereof suspended if required in an inert gas. When the mass is slurried, the inert liquid may be water and the catalysts, free-radical catalysts, such as peroxides, peracids, persalts and azo-type catalysts.
