Abstract

Phthalocyanines are chlorinated or brominated in hot molten phthalic anhydride or a hot molten chlorinated phthalic anhydride by use of elementary chlorine or bromine. Clear green products p are obtained. Halogen carriers may be used. In examples: (1) metal-free phthalocyanine is mixed with phthalic anhydride, heated to 260 DEG C. and chlorinated; the product may be dissolved in sulphuric acid or chlorsulphonic acid and reprecipitated by pouring into water; addition of antimony pentachloride to the melt gives a yellower product; (2) copper phthalocyanine is chlorinated as above in presence of antimony pentachloride, phosphorus pentachloride or ferric chloride; (3) similar to (1) and (2) using tetrachlorphthalic anhydride and antimony pentachloride; (4) copper phthalocyanine is treated with a stream of bromine vapour in nitrogen in molten phthalic anhydride in presence of antimony pentachloride; (5) and (6) nickel and aluminium phthalocyanines are treated as in (1) in presence of antimony pentachloride. The products contain from 11--16 halogen atoms per molecule. Specifications 322,169, [Class 2 (iii)], 360,355, and 461,268 are referred to.
