Abstract
Polyhalogenated anthraquinone 1 : 2 : 5 : 6 and 1 : 2 : 8 : 7-bisacridones having the NH-groups attached in a -positions are obtained by passing chlorine gas into the bisacridones or their lower halogen derivatives in chlorsulphonic acid, in presence of iodine, until the halogen-content exceeds 4 atoms of halogen per molecule. According to examples: (1) the 1 : 2 : 5 : 6 bisacridone is chlorinated to give a Bz : Bz<1>-tetrachlor-4 : 8 dichloro or a pentachloro-derivative; (2) the 1 : 2 8 : 7 bisacridone (obtained by condensing 1 : 8-dichloro-anthraquinone with an anthranilic salt and ring-closing) is chlorinated to the Bz : Bz<1> -tetrachloro-4 : 5 dichloro derivative; (3) the bisacridone obtained by ring-closing anthraquinone 1 : 5 bisanthranilic acid is chlorinated without isolation to the hexachloro product. A brominated or chlorinated product may be used initially and further halogenated; (4) tribromo-1 : 2 : 5 : 6 anthraquinone-bisacridone (obtained by brominating the bisacridone) is chlorinated to give a hexachlor-tribromoderivative.
