Abstract

Hexachlorbenzene is prepared by chlorinating asphaltenes with gaseous chlorine at a temperature of at least 200 DEG C. By "asphaltenes" is meant those constituents of asphalt-bitumen which are soluble in carbon disulphide but insoluble in ethyl ether, and they may be in a pure or impure state. The chlorination may be effected in three stages, i.e. the first at a temperature of 200 DEG to 400 DEG C., the second at about 400 DEG C. and the third at about 550 DEG C. The resulting hexachlorbenzene may be purified by sublimation.
