Abstract

Tetrafluoro-1,3-dithietane and monochlorotrifluoro-1,3-dithietane are prepared by fluorinating tetrachloro-1,3-dithietane (thiophosgene dimer). Fluorination is effected by antimony trifluoride, preferably in stoichiometric excess, in tetramethylene sulphone solvent at between 90 DEG and 200 DEG C. at any pressure conditions, or by HF in the presence of antimony trifluoride, or phosphorus pentafluoride, in excess HF as solvent. The tetrafluoro- and monochlorotrifluoro-compounds are separated by distillation, and the tetrafluoro-compound may be purified by agitation with a mixture of aqueous NaOH and H2O2, drying the organic layer, and distilling.
