Abstract

Monoalkyl-malonic acid chlorides are prepared by reacting an alkyl ketone with phosgene in an inert solvent at a temperature of -80 DEG C. to +80 DEG C. under a pressure of 30-760 mm. Hg. The solvent may be, e.g. methyl propionate or the alkyl-malonic acid formed in the reaction. The solution may contain 0.1-5% of zinc chloride, concentrated sulphuric acid, mercuric chloride, p-toluene sulphonic acid, ferric chloride or boron trifluoride etherate. Examples prepare methyl-, ethyl- and isopropyl-malonyl chlorides.
