A process for the preparation of 2,3- and/or 2,6-dichloropyrazine comprises reacting at least stoichiometric amounts of chlorine with 2-chloropyrazine in a polar, organic, watermiscible solvent, particularly dimethyl formamide. Chlorination is normally effected by passing chlorine gas into the reaction mixture, although some or all of the chlorine may be added as sulphuryl chloride, which also acts as a dehydrating agent.
