Abstract
Tungsten carbide is treated at 450 DEG -1200 DEG C. with a gas containing both oxygen and a halogen and the resulting tungsten-containing vapours, which comprise a mixture of oxyhalides, halides, and oxides, are condensed. The condensate may be converted into sodium tungstate or tungsten acid by treatment with caustic soda or nitric acid respectively. The gaseous reagent should contain 1 mol. of oxygen to 2 mols. of tungsten carbide; both the oxygen and the halogen may be either free or in combination, e.g. as nitrogen peroxide, chlorine peroxide, &c.
