Abstract

Material containing the pentoxides of niobium and tantalum is treated with a nitriding agent, thereby selectively nitriding the niobium, and the product is treated with chlorine, bromine or iodine or a dissociation compound thereof, converting the niobium nitride into a volatile halide which distils and is condensed, the tantalum remaining as oxide. The nitriding may be effected with ammonia at 500-900 DEG C. or with a nitrogen-hydrogen mixture at 900 DEG C. Overheating in the chlorination stage should be avoided by diluting the halogen with an inert gas such as nitrogen.
