Abstract

Side-chain chlorinated methylnaphthalenes are prepared by a process in which chlorine and methylnaphthalene vapour are separately preheated to, and brought into contact with each other at, a temperature between the vaporization point of the methylnaphthalene and 500 DEG C., and under a pressure in the range of one to two atmospheres, with a contact time of not more than five seconds, and the chlorine being always present in an amount less than that required for monosubstitution. It is preferred to use a monomethylnaphthalene, and a temperature in the range 300-400 DEG C. An inert diluent gas, e.g. nitrogen, may be present, and the reactor may be packed or unpacked. The process may be operated continuously, unreacted material being separated by distillation and recycled. In the examples, a - and b -monomethylnaphthalenes are chlorinated in the side-chain, using contact times of 1 to 5 seconds. Specification 378,866 is referred to.
