Abstract

Dichloro-derivatives of alkylaromatic hydrocarbons having at least two alkyl radicals wherein a chlorine atom is substituted on two of the alkyl radicals are prepared by a cyclic vapour phase chlorination process which comprises contacting the vaporized hydrocarbon with chlorine gas in the presence of a free radical initiation source which promotes side-chain chlorination to form a mixture of hydrogen chloride unreacted hydrocarbon and mono- and di-chloro-substituted hydrocarbons, passing this mixture to a vaporisation zone maintained at a temperature between the boiling point of the mono- and di-chloro derivatives, recycling the hydrocarbon and mono-chloro-derivatives to the reaction and recovering the di(chloroalkyl)-aromatic compound. In examples, xylene diluted with carbon tetrachloride is chlorinated in a reaction zone illuminated with ultra-violet light to give xylene dichlorides.
