Abstract
A mixture of carbon tetrachloride and tetrachlorethylene are produced in the predetermined proportions of y and ky by the reaction of <FORM:0749408/IV(a)/1> mols. of chlorine and (3k+2)y mols. of tetrachloroethylene at 600 DEG -800 DEG C. in the absence of a catalyst, followed by heating at 200 DEG -220 DEG C. in presence of a catalyst when hexachloroethane is formed from unreacted chlorine and tetrachloroethylene, followed by heating the mixture with <FORM:0749408/IV(a)/2> mols. of acetylene to 220 DEG -250 DEG C. in presence of a catalyst to give a mixture of carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloroethylene and hydrochloric acid, separated by fractionation, the tetrachloroethylene being re-cycled. A drawing accompanying the Specification shows a pilot plant suitable for the reaction, when the whole of the tetrachlorethane is re-cycled. Thus chlorine is caused to react with acetylene without actually coming into contact in great quantities, if k is nearly zero, and if the whole of the tetrachlorethylene is re-cycled, the products consist of carbon tetrachloride with HCl as by-product. Other halogenated ethylenes may replace the acetylene, in equivalent quantities. Examples in which the process is used to produce only carbon tetrachloride, only tetrachorethane, or a mixture of the two, are given.
