Abstract

In a modification of the invention of the parent Specification, thorium is manufactured by mixing a chlorine compound of thorium, preferably selected from the group consisting of the chloride, oxychloride and mixtures thereof, with calcium, melting the calcium in an inert gas to cause it to react with the thorium compound and liberate free thorium, cooling the mixture, leaching and drying the powdered metal produced. A mixture of about 70 per cent thorium chloride and about 30 per cent of thorium oxychloride may be used. The calcium should preferably be used in large excess of the quantity theoretically required for reduction, e.g., an excess of 100 per cent.
