Abstract

Benzene carboxylic acid fluorides containing trifluoromethyl groups are made by reacting technically anhydrous hydrogen fluoride or antimony trifluoride at a raised temperature with a benzene carboxylic acid chloride substituted by one or more trichloromethyl groups and which may contain further substituents. The products are intermediates for dyes and pharmaceutical products. In examples, technically anhydrous hydrogen fluoride is reacted under pressure with (1) p-trichloromethylbenzoyl chloride or its nuclear substitution products such as its mono- or poly-bromoderivatives or poly-chlor derivatives or 1-trichlormethyl - 2 - chlor - 4 - benzoyl chloride, or (2) o-trichlormethylbenzoyl chloride. Also in examples (3) antimony trifluoride is reacted with m-trichlormethyl-benzoyl chloride or its nuclear substitution products such as the mono- and poly-chloro- or bromo-derivatives; (4) hydrogen fluoride or antimony trifluoride is reacted with 3.5-bis-trichloromethylbenzoyl chloride or halogen substitution products thereof; (5) hydrogen fluoride or antimony trifluoride is reacted with 5-trichloromethyl-1.3-benzene dicarboxylic acid fluoride or its nuclear substitution products such as the mono- and poly-halogen derivatives or with 4-trichloromethyl-1.2-benzene dicarboxylic acid chloride. Trichlormethylbenzene carboxylic acid chlorides are made by chlorinating the corresponding methylbenzene carboxylic acid chlorides or by partially saponifying polytrichlormethylbenzenes. p-Trichlormethylbenzoyl chloride is obtained from p-di-(trichlormethyl)-benzene by heating with water in presence of ferric chloride. m-Trichlormethylbenzoyl chloride is made by chlorinating m-toluic acid chloride in presence of phosphorus trichloride.
