Abstract

Monoketones of the pyrene series are made by reacting pyrene at a temperature below 50 DEG C. in presence of benzene, toluene, chlorbenzene or tetrachlorethane and in presence of a condensing agent such as aluminium or anhydrous ferric chloride with at least one molecule of a halide of a mono-carboxylic acid containing the grouping <FORM:0462209/IV/1> Acids specified are benzoic acid, halogenated benzoic acid, toluic acids, a - and b -naphthoic acids, cinnamic acids, pyridine-carboxylic acids or acrylic acids. The products are vat-dyestuff intermediates. An example describes the reaction of benzoyl chloride (or p-bromo-benzoyl, a -naphthoyl, p-toluyl or cinnamoyl chlorides) with pyrene in benzene in presence of aluminium chloride.
