Abstract

Compounds having the general formula: <FORM:0596293/IV/1> wherein R is an aryl group, substituted or not, are obtained by condensing an excess over two molecular proportions of a benzene or a substituted benzene compound, having at least one free nuclear position, with crude chloral alcoholate in the presence of sulphuric acid. Advantageously more than 10 per cent and best more than 20 per cent in excess of the stoichiometric quantity of the benzene compound is used. The crude chloral alcoholate may be made by chlorinating ethyl alcohol so that the product has a specific gravity of at least 1.5 corresponding to a chloral content of at least 70 per cent, or a specific gravity of at least 1.515 corresponding to a chloral content of 75 per cent. The reaction is suitably carried out in the presence of an inert liquid diluent such as a chlorinated hydrocarbon, e.g. carbon tetrachloride. Specified R residues are: unsubstituted phenyl radicals, phenyl radicals containing hydrocarbon, hydroxyl, nitro or halogen substituents, such as chlorine in the p-position. In examples a :a -bis-(4-chlorphenyl) b :b :b -trichlorethane is obtained as follows: (1) a cooled and agitated mixture of 8.4 parts of crude chloral alcoholate (49 DEG Be at 15 DEG C.) and 26.5 parts of chlorobenzene is treated with 15 per cent oleum over periods of several hours; (2) 184 parts of crude chloral alcoholate (49 DEG Be at 15 DEG C.) and 264 parts of chlorobenzene are treated with sulphuric acid monohydrate over periods of several hours. Specifications 547,871 and 547,874 are referred to.
