Abstract

Acetic anhydride is separated from the vapours produced by the thermal decomposition of acetic acid at ordinary or increased pressure, by passing the vapours under a diminished pressure or vacuum into an organic liquid immiscible with water which is a solvent for acetic anhydride and acetic acid and continuously removing the greater part of the water vapour by means of the vacuum so that the quantity of water in the condensate at any time is small. Suitable solvents are tetrahydronaphthalene and toluene. The reaction vapours may be first cooled to about 200 DEG C.; the pressure employed in the condenser may be 35 m.m. and the temperature of the solvent not above 50 DEG C., for instance 28--30 DEG C.
