Abstract
Maleic anhydride is made by continuously circulating a solution of maleic anhydride through a heating device and then through a vapour release chamber, the solvent (which may be xylene) being one which is substantially <PICT:0609533/IV(b)/1> inert to maleic anhydride, or maleic acid at working temperatures, is immiscible with water, and has a boiling point, at atmospheric pressure within the range 130-160 DEG C., feeding maleic acid into the circulating solution prior to its entry into said heating device, maintaining said heating device at a temperature such that substantially all of the added maleic acid is converted to maleic anhydride with elimination of water, removing solvent and water vapours from said circulating solution in said vapour release chamber, condensing the removed vapours, removing the water from the condensate, and returning the remaining condensed solvent to the system, withdrawing a portion of the circulating solution subsequent to said vapour release chamber, but prior to the point at which maleic acid is fed to the circulating solution, removing solvent from the withdrawn portion by distillation, condensing and returning the removed solvent to the solution whilst withdrawing the maleic anhydride from which the solvent has been removed. The time in the heating device is preferably less than 15 minutes. Referring to the Figure, a solution of maleic anhydride in xylene is drawn from tank 1 by pump 4 and passed through heater 8 and vapour release chamber 10, which may be held at atmospheric or raised or reduced pressure. Vapours of water and xylene pass by pipe 11 to condenser 12 and separator 13, the residual solution of maleic anhydride in xylene returning by pipe 16 to tank 1. Xylene separated from the water in separator 13 returns to tank 1 by pipe 15. Maleic acid is fed to the circulating solution by inlet 23 to pipe 5, and solution is withdrawn by pipe 17 to still 18, where xylene is distilled from the maleic anhydride and returns by pipe 19 and condenser 20 to tank 1.
