Abstract

Organic sulphonylchlorides are made by treating organic sulphonic acids with chlorosulphonic acid in the presence of an inert solvent, in which the sulphonylchloride is soluble, but in which the organic sulphonic acid and sulphuric acid are insoluble, and which forms a second liquid phase, separating the phases after completion of the reaction, washing the solvent phase with water, distilling off the water as an azeotrope with the solvent to remove all the water and raising the temperature to distil off the remaining solvent and finally distilling the sulphonylchloride from the sulphone impurities. The process can be applied to aromatic, aliphatic, isocyclic, heterocyclic and polycyclic sulphonic acids. Suitable solvents are cycloparaffins, e.g. cyclohexane, and halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons, e.g. chloroform, carbontetrachloride, 1,2 - dichloroethane, tetrachloroethane and pentachlorofluoroethane. The solvent can be reused, if necessary after purification. The reaction is usually carried out below 70 DEG C., preferably in the range 20-40 DEG C. after washing the solvent phase, the azeotropic distillation is continued until all the water has been removed, if necessary by adding additional solvent or by recirculating the solvent. The sulphuric acid phase, from which any small amounts of sulphonylchloride can be removed by washing with solvent, and which may contain unreacted sulphonic acid, can be used for sulphonating hydrocarbons to give sulphonic acids which may be used as starting materials in the present process. Examples describe the preparation of toluene- and benzene-sulphonylchlorides.
