Abstract
Fatty acids are separated from a fatty material into fatty acids which are solid at 15 DEG C. and fatty acids which are liquid at 15 DEG C. by dissolving the fatty material in isopropyl alcohol, treating the solution with an excess of solid caustic potash in the presence of 0.1 to 0.9 per cent of water, and then cooling the reaction mixture so as to separate into a liquid phase containing the potassium soaps of the liquid fatty acids and a precipitate containing the potassium soaps of the solid fatty acids. The fatty material may comprise fats, such as palm oil, and mixtures of fatty acids. The fatty material is preferably dissolved in 1.5 to 9 times its weight of isopropyl alcohol. The quantity of solid caustic potash added to the solution is between 1.1 and 1.4 times the quantity calculated. The water content is complied with by using an isopropyl alcohol containing 0.05 to 0.15 per cent of water and using a caustic potash having an assay of at least 85 per cent KoH. The saponification is preferably effected in a grinding and emulsifying apparatus. The mixture after saponification is cooled to 0 DEG C. or lower. The precipitated soaps may be filtered off and the soaps of the liquid fatty acids obtained from the filtrate. The fatty acids may be obtained by acidification in each case.
