Abstract
Tricyclodecane dicarboxylic acid is produced by a process comprising fusing tricyclodecanedimethylol with a caustic alkali at a temperature of at least 250 DEG C. The preferred alkali is caustic potash. The salt formed by the fusing is dissolved in water neutralized with a mineral acid, the potassium salt formed is filtered off and the remaining solution is extracted with a water insoluble solvent such as benzene, a higher ketone, an ester or a chlorinated hydrocarbon. The pure dicarboxylic acid is obtained from the extracted solution by treating with a surface-active agent or by treatment with a small amount of an oxygen-yielding bleaching agent. Mixtures of tricyclodecane-methylol with solvents such as are obtained in the production of tricyclodecane-dimethylol may be used as starting materials.
