Abstract

Carbazole is prepared from carbazole sulphate or carbazole sulphate containing material by decomposition with water in the presence of a water-immiscible solvent for the liberated carbazole. The reaction temperature is preferably increased from 20-30 DEG C. initially to the B.P. of the carbazole solution. Carbazole is recovered from the solvent by crystallization or evaporation in steam. The solvent may be, for example, a hydrocarbon, e.g. benzene or toluene, ether, or chlorobenzene. An example of the process is given. Specification 676,575 is referred to.
