Abstract

Organic sulphohalides are prepared by reacting at elevated temperature, e.g. 90 DEG C.-110 DEG C., a phosphorus pentahalide, e.g. PCl5 or PBr5, with a hydroxyalkane sulphonic acid or a salt thereof in which acid the carbon atom carrying the hydroxyl group is separated from one of the carbon atoms carrying a sulphonic acid group by one or two carbon atoms, and recovering the sulphohalides formed from the reaction mixture. In examples potassium 1-hydroxypropane-2,3-disulphonate is treated with PCl5 to give 1,3-propanesultone-2-sulphochloride, chloropropene-sulphochloride and small amounts of dichloropropane sulphochlorides; potassium 3 - hydroxypentane - 1, 2 - disulphonate is treated with PCl5 to give 1-ethyl-1,3-propane-sultone-2-sulphochloride.
