Abstract
A mixture of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate and potassium chloride is heated at below 800 DEG C. to prepare substantially linear polymeric potassium polyphosphate having a formula such as (KPO3)m. Preferably equimolecular proportions of the reactants are used. The heating preferably is first conducted at not above 400 DEG C., e.g. 2-300 DEG C., for an hour and then for two hours at a higher temperature. The removal of steam and ammonium chloride from the product may be assisted during heating by agitation or the passage of an inert gas thereover.
