Abstract

Phosphate fertilizers are produced by heating under pressure metaphosphate of calcium, potassium or sodium with water in the presence of a basic compound reacting with the acid products of the hydrolysis, e.g. phosphate rock, dolomite, limestone or ammonia. It is stated that the meta phosphate is converted to primary o-phosphate, which is then converted to dicalcium phosphate and phosphoric acid which reacts with phosphate rock. The product is then substantially di-calcium phosphate. In examples, calcium metaphosphate is mixed with an equimolecular amount of ammonium hydrate or phosphate rock ground to 200 mesh, and water added in proportions, water: metaphosphate not exceeding 0.8 by weight. The mixture is heated to 260 DEG F. in an autoclave under 20 lb. pressure, for 10/30 minutes. The product is dry and contains about 48/50 per cent of available P2O5. Pressures up to 136 lb. and temperatures up to 350 DEG F. may be employed. A rotary autoclave may be used with steam containing ammonia injected under pressure. The product is then in granular form.
